In an earlier age, it was common for grown adults under the age of twenty-five to be consigned to the guardianship of another grown adult — usually a somewhat older man, but not always — and to thence be at that guardian’s mercy when it came to their education, employment, marriage and finances. Heyer’s work features many a guardian, both official and unofficial (often self-appointed). Which is your favourite of those who were actually appointed to fill the role?
