Set in the titular small village in Victorian England, this book simmers with wit, satire and clever, incredibly amusing, dialogue. It is the 1850s and times are changing, but the residents of Cranford resist all thoughts of forsaking their prized genteel respectability. A new family in town brings new ideas, however, and soon the entrenched pillars of the community find themselves daring to think differently, and to seek their own happiness. A series of vignettes rather than a plot-driven novel, the whole nevertheless hangs together perfectly. Just delightful!
